A Quirky Afternoon Tea in the Lake District

There’s something beautifully unhurried about afternoons in Ulverston. Perhaps it’s the way the town’s cobbled streets seem to invite you to wander a little slower. Here at Shed One Distillery, we’ve always believed that the best moments are the ones crafted with care, and our Afternoon G&Tea with Distillery Tour was created with just that in mind.

Step inside our little distillery-born in a humble garden shed and now found in The Old Calf Shed—and you’ll find the aromas of citrus peels, spices, and botanicals dancing gently through the air.

Your G&Tea begins with a welcome drink. Your choice of a G&T or alcohol-free alternative. Then a guided tour of our sustainable, award-winning micro-distillery, where we share the stories behind our small-batch gins and the craft that goes into every drop.

Afternoon Tea on a cake stand

Now, it’s time to settle back in our quirky and stylish bar. Your afternoon tea cake stand comes with botanical-inspired sweet treats and savoury bites. Included are quince-infused scones with a juniper glaze served with preserves or our special gin jelly marmalade. All made by Zoe in Shed One’s gluten-free kitchen. It’s afternoon tea with a Lake District twist: relaxed, flavourful, and just a little bit mischievous.

But Ulverston’s quirks don’t end at our door.

After your G&Tea, wander into town to the Laurel and Hardy Museum. Did you know that Ulverston is the birthplace of Stan Laurel? You can even walk the Stan Laurel trail.  The museum is one of the most delightfully eccentric attractions in the region With Laurel & Hardy reels on a loop, and a cornucopia of memorabilia collected by the original owner, and now cared for and curated by his nephew.

Among the many festivals, including Another Fine Fest dedicated to music and comedy, Ulverston is home to the famous Lantern Festival. Homemade lanterns, made by individuals and community groups are promenaded from each corner of the town, gathering at Ford Park for a firework display. Some are so big they need a gang of volunteers to carry them.

If you prefer your adventures outdoors, the Sir John Barrow Monument offers a scenic climb and sweeping views across Morecambe Bay. Built in memory of Sir John Barrow, another famous son of Ulverston. A member of the Admiralty and one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society. The monument is affectionately known to locals as “The Pepperpot”.

For something entirely different, pop into the Swarthmoor Hall, known as the cradle of the Quaker movement. This is where George Fox, one of the founders of Quakerism, met and eventually married Margaret Fell. It is a beautiful place for reflection and relaxation, with its beautiful gardens and café.

In Ulverston, the quirkiest afternoons are often the most memorable, and at Shed One Distillery, we’re always crafting something special to share.
