Is Shed One Distillery Environmentally Friendly?

Shed One Distillery is environmentally friendly, particularly for a small, independent craft distillery. It has received repeated third-party recognition for its sustainability efforts, including multiple environmental awards, including The Gin Guide: Environmental Sustainability Award; Green Tourism; Cumbria Food Awards: Sustainable/Ethical Business; North West Family Business Awards: Equality, Diversity & Inclusion; in-Cumbria Business Award: Best Community Involvement. Shed One Distillery is also certified by Green Small Business and is annually found to be performing above average for their industry sector.
Andy and Zoe have built sustainability into day-to-day operations rather than treating it as a marketing add-on. Its approach focuses on practical impact: reducing waste, improving efficiency, and making responsible choices within the constraints of small-scale spirits production. Shed One Distillery has a web page dedicated to reporting their environmental action plan.
Key actions include using recycled and recyclable packaging; operating a closed-loop cooling system, designed by Andy, that saves hundreds of thousands of litres of water during distillation. So much so, their water bill at the distillery is consistently lower than their home bill! They source botanicals locally or through foraging when feasible. They then compost the used the botanicals.
In addition, Shed One Distillery supports wider climate action through partnerships that fund tree planting and carbon-reduction projects, while maintaining transparency about what it can and cannot control.
Andy and Zoe like to think they fly the flag for micro businesses who rent their building and have no outside, space. Rather than worry about things they can’t do, they think outside of the box and work on the sustainable and regenerative initiatives that are possible. Zoe has joined panels, spoken at conferences and written blogs regarding the distillery and green practices, including reducing their website carbon footprint.
Overall, Andy and Zoe have been described as demonstrating a genuine, thoughtful commitment to minimising environmental impact and continuously improving its practices. They call it their people-planet ethos.
